"I bow down to the entire Spiritual lineage of Gurus, starting with Lord Sadashiva,
then proceeding through Lord Shiva incarnate as Adi Shankaracharya,
and continuing through my own Gurus, up to the present."

SUGWAY; PHILOSOPHY & THE MISSION

SUGWAY (Society for Understanding God Within and Around You) was founded in 2004 by GyanYogi Sadhguru Swami Anilji Maharaj. The spiritual lineage of SUGWAY traces its roots back to the esteemed Adi Shankaracharya and extends through three revered contemporary masters: Shri Khateshwar Maharaj, Shri Khaptinath Maharaj, and Shri Swami Anilji Maharaj. The core teachings of SUGWAY are firmly rooted in Advaita Vedanta, with a primary mission of disseminating AtmaGyan (Self-Realization) worldwide. This spiritual tradition traces its origins back to the illustrious Indian Vedic Scholar, Bhagwan Shri Adi Shankaracharya, who expounded Advaita Vedanta in the 8th century. It is believed that Lord Shiva Incarnated form of Adi Shankaracharya to explain the essence of the Vedas and present the highest spiritual truth, i.e., Advaita.

Divine Succession: Passing the Spiritual Torch Through Guru-Parampara.

Guru-parampara, the sacred tradition of passing a guru’s spiritual mantle, forms the timeless thread that connects wisdom across generations. This spiritual lineage represents the unbroken chain of knowledge and guidance flowing from one enlightened guru to the next. Each guru in this chain plays a pivotal role in imparting spiritual wisdom, fostering growth, and nurturing the divine connection within their disciples. Rooted in reverence and respect, the Guru-parampara ensures the continuity of profound teachings, carrying the light of spiritual enlightenment through the ages. It is a living testament to the transformative power of wisdom, compassion, and the enduring connection between the guru and their spiritual successors.

Vedantic Ancestry: Unveiling Our Spiritual Lineage

In the realm of Advaita Vedanta, the perspective on spiritual lineage takes on a profound significance, echoing the essence of non-duality. Advaita, meaning “nonduality” in Sanskrit, asserts the fundamental oneness of the individual soul with the ultimate reality (Brahman). In the context of a Guru Parampara within the Advaitic tradition, the lineage is not merely a succession of teachers but a continuum of enlightened beings who have realized the ultimate truth. The Guru in this lineage serves as a guide to help disciples recognize their innate divinity and transcend the illusion of separation. In the Advaitic view, the Guru is not a separate entity but a manifestation of the eternal truth, guiding aspirants to the direct experience of their own essential nature. The spiritual lineage, in Advaita, is a conduit for transmitting the timeless wisdom of self-realization. Thus, a seeker within the Advaitic tradition views the Guru Parampara as a sacred thread connecting them to the eternal truth and facilitating the realization of the non-dual nature of existence.

Bhagwan Adi Shankaracharya

Adi Shankaracharya, an illustrious luminary of ancient India, left an indelible mark on the spiritual and philosophical landscape of the subcontinent. Born in the 8th century, his profound contributions continue to resonate through the corridors of time. His greatest gift to India and the world was the propagation of the Advaita Vedanta philosophy, a profound doctrine that transcends religious and philosophical boundaries. With eloquence and unparalleled wisdom, Adi Shankaracharya expounded the profound idea that at the core of human existence lies an unbreakable unity between the individual soul and the supreme reality (Brahman). His teachings emphasized the pursuit of self-realization as the ultimate goal of life, guiding seekers towards a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of all creation.

Adi Shankaracharya’s Advaita philosophy not only reinvigorated Hindu thought but also continues to inspire seekers, scholars, and philosophers, fostering a legacy that remains a timeless source of wisdom and enlightenment. Adi Shankaracharya’s enduring brilliance extended beyond the realms of philosophy. His tireless journey took him across the length and breadth of India, where he established centers of learning known as “mathas.”

These mathas became hubs for the preservation and dissemination of his profound teachings, nurturing a vibrant intellectual tradition that persists to this day. His insightful commentaries on ancient texts, such as the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita, unearthed the timeless wisdom contained within these scriptures, rendering them accessible to scholars and seekers. Adi Shankaracharya’s legacy stands as a testament to the enduring power of spiritual wisdom to bridge divides and lead humanity towards a more harmonious existence.

His Advaita philosophy, with its message of unity, not only enriched India’s spiritual tapestry but also left an indelible imprint on the global understanding of the human condition and the quest for ultimate truth.

Shri Khaptinath Maharaj

Born in 1890 Bagapur village in Chandur Railway, Amravati District of Mahrashtra . Khaptinath Maharaj was not just a great yogi but also a miraculous saint devoted to serving humanity. At the tender age of 16, driven by a quest for God, he embarked on a solitary journey, spending 14 years in the depths of a dense forest. In this solitude, he experienced the divine light and realized the presence of God within himself. Embracing his eccentric behavior, locals affectionately nicknamed him “Khapti,” . Living a remarkable 113 years, spanning three centuries, he earned the title of “Super Saint.” Throughout his extensive tenure, Khapti Maharaj addressed myriad problems, earning a reputation for miraculous solutions. His profound love for animals was evident, and he passionately advocated for a rational and intellectual approach to yoga, specifically “GyanYoga.” This path, focused on intellectual wisdom, aimed at releasing tensions stemming from worldly attachments and achieving a state of bliss. Khapti Maharaj’s life exemplified a harmonious blend of spiritual depth and practical solutions for the challenges of existence.

Journey of Spiritual Penance: Realizing the Divine Within

Maharaj seldom spoke about himself, avoiding questions about his personal life and Guru, making it challenging to gather information about his early days. From his occasional remarks, it is known that one day, as a teenager, he attended a function at Maniram Baba’s ashram. After staying overnight, he left for the deep forest to seek knowledge of salvation, spending about 14 years there.

The Sacred Convergence: Khateshwar Maharaj Initiates Khaptinath Maharaj.

Maharaj remained reticent about his personal life, especially regarding his early days and his Guru. Extracting information proved challenging, as he seldom divulged details. From occasional anecdotes, it is known that as a teenager, Maharaj attended an event at Maniram Baba’s ashram. The next morning, he embarked on a journey to the deep forest, seeking knowledge of salvation. For approximately 14 years, he resided amidst the dense forest. Maharaj consistently bowed to the Khateswar Maharaj’s samadhi while uttering, “Om Guruve Namah,” signifying respect for his Guru. This reverence indicates that how Khateshwar Maharaj was revered by him as a Guru. According to Baba, Khateshwar Maharaj had once hit him with a stick on his feet when he tried to play with a cow which belonged to khateswar Maharaj himself , suggesting a possible direction to go to the jungle.

In a small Marathi poetry book from 1920, Maharaj wrote about facing abuse at his maternal uncle’s house, which compelled him to seek solace in the dense forest, enduring snakes and wild animals. This clarified that he ventured into the forest after enduring mistreatment. Saint Khapti Maharaj conducted his penance (Tapashrya) in the dense forest of Amravati-Multai in Madhya Pradesh, now a reserved forest with numerous wild animals, including tigers. Maharaj, in a lighthearted manner, often mentioned staying in a dark cave during this time, with snakes being a primary concern. Recounting his experiences, he mentioned snakes passing over his body while sleeping on stones, and frequent visits from tigers and other wild animals. Time calculations suggest that Maharaj spent an impressive fourteen years in the dense forest performing hard penance(tapashrya).

The Upanishads affirm, “Brahma vijanati sa Brahma eva Bhavati,” translating to “He is God, who knew the God.” This ancient wisdom, not confined to any particular sect or religion, holds a pivotal place in understanding the divine. Khapti Maharaj, a revered Guru, embodied this wisdom, being hailed as an incarnation of God by his followers. In contrast to various cultural perspectives, Khapti Maharaj’s teachings aligned with those of great saints throughout history. His straightforward approach encouraged followers to engage their intellect, distinguishing humans by their unique ability to exercise the power of the brain. Inheriting the legacy of yogis like Khateshwar Maharaj and Maniram Baba, Khapti Maharaj emphasized understanding the root cause of human anxieties. He urged followers to explore the essence that sustains life, thought, and movement—the principle referred to as God, soul, self, or power. Acquiring knowledge of this eternal truth, as taught by Khapti Maharaj, promises liberation from misunderstandings and doubts that breed anxiety and sorrow. Khapti Maharaj emphasized, “God resides within your mind, eager to guide it for your well-being. Yet, you tend to overlook Him, habitually seeking pleasure in the external world. Discover the profound treasure of happiness by turning inward—an unparalleled and ceaseless joy awaits within.” Khaptinath Maharaj spanned three centuries, born in 1890 and transcending his physical form (dropping his worldly shield : Body), Going back to his original form and the process known as Samadhi in 2003. Living for 113 years, he served as a Guru, Maharaj, or saint for an impressive 87 years—a potentially recordsetting dedication to guiding and helping people.

Shri Swami AnilJi Maharaj

“Swami Anilji Maharaj, the Enlightened Spiritual Master and an entrusted disciple continuing Khaptinath Maharaj’s sacred mission”.

Imbued with devotion for guru since childhood, Swamiji hails from Sri Kshetra Ramtek, District Nagpur, Born in 1948, when his mother took vows to Sri Dattareya . Despite facing financial challenges within his family of four brothers, three sisters, and parents, Swamiji persevered to complete his graduation. Life took an extraordinary turn as he embarked on a journey that included working as a bank manager, venturing into business, and facing failures. Seeking answers, he delved into the study of astrology, received grace from the renowned saint Nana Maharaj Tarnekar of Indore, and immersed himself in the study of Veda scriptures and Sant Vadamay. Despite these efforts, the reasons behind his continued hardships remained elusive, leading Swamiji to reflect on his pre-enlightenment state, where he often felt as if he confronted a daily struggle for survival. Throughout these immensely challenging times, he steadfastly maintained unwavering devotion and commitment to his Guru’s teachings and spiritual practice.

Sacred Confluence: Swamiji's Transformative Meeting with Shri Khaptinath Maharaj.

A pivotal moment occurred on May 5, 1992, when he serendipitously encountered Shri Sant Khaptinath Maharaj in Nagpur. This marked the catalyst for Swamiji’s accelerated pursuit of the purpose for which he was destined. Recognizing Swamiji’s inherent qualities, Saint Khapti Maharaj drew him close, keeping Swami Ji in constant proximity. In this close association, Swamiji came to the realization that only Shri Sant Khapti Maharaj held the key to fulfilling his aspirations. What was Swamiji’s wish? He sought to unravel the mysteries of life’s unfolding events, to navigate through increasingly distressing situations, and to gain insights into the nature and presence of God.

The Commencement of a New Journey: Embarking on a Spiritual Quest.

Shri Sant Khapti Maharaj, attuned to the inner thoughts of his devoted disciple, stood ready to grant Swamiji’s wish , while conscientiously imparting awareness of the associated costs. Maharaj accompanied Swamiji to diverse locations, unveiling the dualities of joy and sorrow inherent in the world. He instilled the realization that unhappiness was not exclusive to Swamiji but a pervasive aspect of the entire world. This insight gradually led Swamiji to embrace the ethos of renunciation.

Sadhguru Swami AniJi Maharaj with Param Guru Khaptinath Maharaj

Maharaj, keeping Swamiji in close proximity within the Ashram, exposed him to the challenges inherent in Ashram life and guided him in resolving them. Swamiji witnessed firsthand Maharaj’s dedicated service to devotees and the methodologies employed. Through various services assigned by Maharaj, Swamiji confronted and triumphed over his ego. Periodic visits to the Samadhi of Saint Khateshwar Maharaj in Jodmoha became opportunities for Maharaj to impart lessons on the Guru tradition and sect. Swamiji’s adept reading skills and robust intellectual understanding prompted Maharaj to explain intricate concepts uniquely, setting him apart from other disciples. Despite Swamiji’s comprehension, the enigmatic nature of these teachings led to resentment from fellow disciples who struggled to grasp them. On one hand, Swamiji benefited from the continual guidance of a proven figure like Saint Khaptinath Maharaj, and on the other, he delved into ongoing assimilation of Veda-Shruti knowledge. His persistent Shravan(listening) Manan(contemplation) Nididhyasan(meditation)unfolded over 5-7 years, gradually yielding answers to his questions and fostering the emergence of theological knowledge. Saint Khapti Maharaj guided Swamiji towards a life of service for the greater good of the world , marking the end of his worldly pursuits. Despite encouragement to engage in significant business, Swamiji faced substantial losses and societal disgrace, leading him to abandon the pursuit of wealth and renounce the world. His Guru Shri khaptinath maharaj , finally, concluded his worldly life, freeing him from earthly ties.

In this context, a hymn from Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj reflects on Swamiji’s transformative journey:

Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj outlines the qualifications for Sainthood(Guru-pad) in this hymn, which exactly mirrors the journey of Swami Anil Ji. Enduring suffering and loss, Shri Sant Khapti Maharaj joyously passed the mantle of succession to his disciple, providing written instructions to continue his noble work.  Empowered by Shri Sant Khaptinath Maharaj, who bestowed upon him knowledge, accomplishments, power, and enlightenment, Swami Ji’s life’s purpose became maintaining the Guruship and continuing his Guru’s work. His existence transcended worldly and practical concerns, leading to the ending of material pursuits.

Three aspects have been brought forward in the hymn.

  1. Absolute detachment from material possessions such as family, wealth, and other worldly attachments.
  2. Utter eradication of desires, freeing oneself from the bondage of longing.
  3. Total elimination of ego, manifesting in the ability to endure insults and societal neglect without retaliation.

Moreover, it advocates for a profound detachment from physical existence, enduring bodily ailments and discomforts with the conviction that one transcends mere corporeal existence.

In essence, the song encapsulates the essence of Lord Krishna’s teachings in the fifteenth chapter, advocating for the complete detachment from Maya (illusion) through discerning rationality (vivek) and unwavering determination: “Asanga Shastrena Drudhena Chhitva” – breaking free from worldly entanglements with steadfast resolve.
